About the CEA-CED

ASSOCIATION FOR BUSINESS ETHICS Circle of European Ethics Officers
The Circle of European Ethics Officers (CED) is an autonomous unit within the CEA. It includes CED-Conferences and CED-Professional

CED-Conferences (CED-C) brings together managers of companies in charge of ethics, as well as experts, researchers and teachers concerned with promoting standards of corporate law and ethical professional behaviour.
This forum establishes a common ground within which the participants:

  • exchange experiences
  • discuss cases
  • learn about developments in corporate law
  • learn about new standards of corporate social responsibility
  • develop perspectives about evolving notions of professional ethics
  • make proposals for preventing non-ethical behaviour

Such meetings take place every two months at participating companies. They focus us upon the following points:

  • presentation of the host company
  • its attitude concerning ethical matters
  • analysis of case studies
  • the study of a subject chosen in advance
  • An outside expert expresses his view on a subject of current interest or fundamental concern. This is followed by question and answers and debate.

The program and the agenda for future meetings are communicated by the CED.

CED-Professional (CED-P) deals with specific aspects of the profession of Ethics Officer : mission, status, recruitment, competencies, training,, etc.
CED-P offers the opportunity to its members to share and discuss with peers every subject in their scope of responsibility.
Professionals only qualify to join the CED-Professional meetings .

About the ECOA

Business ethics is not new. Efforts to apply ethical theories and values to commerce can be found throughout history and in the works of the great philosophers. Until recently, however, business ethics was largely an academic affair.

In the mid 1980s allegations of waste and fraud in the U.S. defense industry increased. In July 1985 President Ronald Reagan appointed a "blue-ribbon" commission to recommend a solution to the growing problems. The commission concluded, "To assure that their houses are in order, defense contractors must promulgate and vigilantly enforce codes of ethics that address the unique problems and procedures incident to defense procurement. They must also develop and implement internal controls to monitor these codes of ethics and sensitive aspects of contract compliance."

By spring 1992, a handful of ethics officers had incorporated the ECOA, written its by-laws and mission statement, and held its first meeting. Since its inception, the ECOA has served exclusively those individuals with the responsibilities for designing and managing their organizations' ethics, compliance, or business conduct programs. It was incorporated as a non-consulting, multi-industry, non-profit organization and is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Our Mission:

The ECOA is committed to tapping the network of knowledge and thought leadership from our collective experiences; to align trust and corporate integrity with business performance; and, together, to shape the future of the ethics and compliance profession. Further, the ECOA is committed to:

  • Being the leading provider of ethics, compliance, and corporate governance resources to ethics and compliance professionals worldwide and
  • Providing members with access to an unparalleled network of ethics and compliance professionals and a global forum for the exchange of ideas and strategies.

Our Vision:

  • To be the recognized authority on business ethics, compliance, and corporate integrity.

What We Do:

The ECOA assembles practitioners who are new to the field as well as those with years of experience to share. Through the ECOA, practicing ethics and compliance officers address the tough issues they face every day. Members learn from one another and, in turn, help to foster a global commitment to ethics and integrity. The collegiality of ECOA members has been our strength and the principal source of our ability to create a trusting and frank environment for all. We draw value from the diversity of cultures and industries represented among our members and from the sincerity and character of our colleagues.

Our Commitment
The ECOA is committed to building trust and corporate integrity worldwide. Our 1,300 members are located in over-20 countries and on five continents around the globe.

About EBEN

The European Business Ethics Network (EBEN) is a membership driven organization concerned with promoting business ethics education and training as well as improving practices throughout Europe. It was established in 1987 in Brussels and is the only European network focussed exclusively on business ethics and business ethics education. EBEN has over 1100 members coming from 40 different countries (figures for 2007). National Networks of EBEN are established in Germany, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, France, Turkey, Austria, Greece and Italy.

Business is increasingly expected to take on social and ethical responsibilities beyond minimum legal requirements. The academic and business members of EBEN all have a contribution to make to the network and its activities.
Our academic members are at the forefront of scholarly research in business ethics in their countries and represent the cutting edge of European business ethics inquiry. The EBEN conferences offer academics and non-academics the chance to meet and exchange views.

In a dynamic social and political environment EBEN can support the businessperson by offering:

  • An International network of academically informed competencies in the field of business ethics and related fields such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Accountability and Corporate Citizenship.
  • An arena for exchanging information on business initiatives taken and best practice.
  • International connections with business ethics researchers and consultancies

The diversity of membership of EBEN means that there are many varied views within the group about business ethics. EBEN is an inclusive network, and accepts this plurality of perspectives.

About the IBE
The Institute of Business Ethics was established in 1986 by business to encourage high standards of business behaviour based on ethical values. It is a registered charity.

Our vision: To lead the dissemination of knowledge and good practice in business ethics.

What we do
We raise public awareness of the importance of doing business ethically, and collaborate with other UK and international organisations with interests and expertise in business ethics.

We help organisations to strengthen their ethics culture and encourage high standards of business behaviour based on ethical values. We assist in the development, implementation and embedding of effective and relevant ethics and corporate responsibility policies and programmes. We help organisations to provide guidance to staff and build relationships of trust with their principal stakeholders.

How we achieve this

  • Offering practical and confidential advice on ethical issues, policy, implementation, support systems and codes of ethics
  • Delivering training in business ethics for board members, staff and employees
  • Undertaking research and surveys into good practice and ethical business conduct
  • Publishing practical reports to help identify solutions to business dilemmas
  • Providing a neutral forum for debating current issues and meetings to facilitate the sharing of good practice
  • Supporting business education in the delivery of business ethics in the curriculum
  • Offering the media and others informed opinion on current issues and good practice. Please contact us if you would like assistance.

Our team apply their practical business experience of the issues that organisations face to fulfil the Institute's vision and mission.
